Introduction to Data Files for McGrattan-Rogerson Article in Winter 1998 Quarterly Review The accompanying five files contain the raw data on hours, employment, and wages collected by the U.S. Bureau of the Census during its 1950-90 decennial surveys. Each file contains all the data collected for one year (1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, or 1990). The data in each file are organized as described in Appendix A of the McGrattan-Rogerson article in the winter 1998 Quarterly Review. Columns The 16 columns in each file correspond to the following 16 fields: 1. Sex 2. Age 3. Marital status 4. Total population 5. Number employed 6. Total employed part-time 7. Employed 1-14 hours per week 8. Employed 15-29 hours per week 9. Employed 30-34 hours per week 10. Total employed full-time 11. Employed 35-39 hours per week 12. Employed 40 hours per week 13. Employed 41-48 hours per week 14. Employed 49-59 hours per week 15. Employed 60 or more hours per week 16. Mean personal earned income. The first three columns in each file--the fields "sex," "age," and "marital status"--contain not measured data, but numbers that simply represent specific demographic categories: 1. Sex 0 = Males 1 = Females 2. Age 0 = Total (15 years and over) 1 = From 15 to 24 years 2 = From 25 to 34 years 3 = From 35 to 44 years 4 = From 45 to 54 years 5 = From 55 to 64 years 6 = From 65 to 74 years 7 = 75 years and over 3. Marital status 0 = Total 1 = Single 2 = Married, spouse present 3 = Married, spouse present, youngest child under 6 years 4 = Married, spouse present, youngest child from 6 to 17 years 5 = Married, spouse absent 6 = Widowed 7 = Divorced. Rows The rows in the data files thus each correspond to the hours, employment, and wage data collected for a specific demographic group identified by sex, age, and marital status. For example, the row with "1,5,7" in the first three columns provides measured data in the other columns of that row for females (1) aged 55-64 years (5) who are divorced (7). Sources Details on the sources of the hours, employment, and wage data are available in Appendix A of the winter 1998 Quarterly Review article.
